Scoping

If you’re trying to outsource your MVP, one of the things you will need is a specification. This is a document that describes what features and behaviour your product should have.

A secret of the software industry though is that agencies will allow themselves to be commissioned on a project without having a watertight specification, on the belief that they can work it out as they go. This will kill you project stone dead, but only after you’ve spent all your money.

You need a way to create a good specification, without having any experience of writing a specification, or commissioning software before. A way around this is to get an agency to do a scoping exercise for you.

This will cost you a few thousand pounds, but the output from it will be an analysis of what you are trying to do, hopefully some decent advice as to whether you should proceed or not, a specification that describes your MVP, and a quotation as to how much it will cost.

If you’re planning to outsource your MVP, you absolutely look into getting a scoping exercise done.
